Analyse of the Two Key Moments Essay Example for Free
Analyse of the Two Key Moments EssayJust before this key moment starts, the guards takes Rebecca take in out of her cage, on its way to the place w present people are hanged. She is astonished that trick is confessing. The key moment starts with reminder refusing to say that he saw Rebecca retain in the Devils company, or anybody else. Danforth demands that varan prove the purity of his soul by accusing others, alone Hale advises that it is enough that he confesses himself. Parris agrees, plainly Danforth demands that Proctor should sign up a document. Proctor says that he has confessed to God, and that is enough. He asks Danforth whether a good defense must be public. Proctor wishes to keep only his name, and Danforth thus refuses to accept his apology. Danforth orders Proctor to be hanged. Hale begs Elizabeth to plead with Proctor to sign a confession, but Elizabeth states that Proctor has his goodness now, and God forbid that she take it from him. The characters have turning points in the key moments, and I am going to discuss what happens to Hale, John Proctor and Danforth in this key moment. Hales public opinions in witchcraft changes, so does his faith in the law.In Act 4, he tells the accused witches to lie, to confess their supposed sins in order to save their own lives. This change of heart and hopelessness, makes Hale gain the audiences sympathy but non its respect, since he lacks the moral character of Rebecca Nurse or, and as it turns out at the end of Act 4, John Proctor. Although Hale recognises the evil of the witch trials, his result is not resistance but surrender. He thinks that survival is the highest good, even if it means helping oneself to injustice, which honourable and truly heroic characters can never accept.John Proctor changes himself and provides a final charge of the witch trials. Offered the opportunity to make a confession that he has seen the Devil, he almost surrenders, even signing a confession letter. His great pride and fear of public opinion drove him to hold his truth, adultery, from the court, but by the end of the play he is more concerned with his individual(prenominal) honesty than his public reputation. He still wants to save his name, but for a personal and religious view, rather than the publics reasons. Proctors refusal to provide a false confession is a true religious and personal determination. His confession would break his friends who are convicted who are brave enough to die as support to the truth. Also it will dishonour himself, staining not just his public reputation, but also his soul. He then decides to change his mind and tells Danforth that he does not want to lie, this bringing him to heaven. He has now redeemed his sin. As Elizabeth says to end the play, responding to Hales plea that she convince Proctor to publicly confess He have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him In this key moment Danforth shows that his greatest interest is to protect the reput ation of the court when he prompts Proctor to sign a confession, thus preventing the reception of his death. I think that Danforth has changed internally but not externally. I think he believes that the witchcraft is fake, but externally he is still a set and craving for a good reputation. If he did believe people at the end of the play, then he would not convict John Proctor, but he did because it was to late then, and his reputation would be ruined, as he has convicted people before. It is a crucial moment for the audience because they think Proctor is a bad and not a honourable man when he signs the paper. It is dramatic irony, but not as much. The audience know that Proctor does not see the Devil, to save his support by confessing and showing you don not lie, he says he has been seeing the Devil. But he suddenly changes, he rips the piece of paper representing his confession, and explains that his name is more important, he wants to show he is a heroic man, so he says he never has see the Devil, which is true, and the audience see how he is a reveal man, and is going to die being an honourable and a heroic man.A crucible is a melting pot, where substances are heated to a high temperature to come rid of impurities. Miller is suggesting the play is like to purge by fire, a form of cleansing. This is a metaphor for spiritual improvements as the result of a confession being exerted. It is known as cleaning or cleansing yourself by confessing to seeing the Devil. There is many ways to explain the name of the book and here are some more first witches supposedly boil potions in cauldrons and a synonym for cauldron is crucible.Secondly, it has a metaphorical meaning the society of capital of Oregon is being heated and stirred in an attempt to remove the impurities and leave only the pure members of the society. One of the central themes of the play is the spiritual development of John Proctor. It is a powerful and complex play. All of the action takes place in doors and it is very black, simplistic and it emphasises the lifestyle of the people and it echoes the claustrophobic atmosphere of the play. The play focuses on ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances. In the play Miller is discussing the forces of evil.In the attempt to cut out evil there is indisputablely a degree of irony. The irony in this play is that evil and tragedy actually occur from the actions of the unwise and over eager characters such as Danforth and Parris and to a certain extent Hale, who became responsible for deaths, misery and cruelty. Miller is suggesting that humans are vulnerable to evil and he aims to show that the evil generated in Salem was through a combination of circumstances for which no one person could be held entirely responsible but yet none were guilt free. The Crucible was based on real events and characters. The people of the 17th Century Salem, witchcraft were a very real and forceful threat. Many people were accused of being witches, and were tortured and executed. The contrast of witches spread to a lot of places around the world. Witches thought to commit crimes have various proofs of a witch including the testimony of a fellow witch, the common belief or accusation of those who live with suspected witch, cursing followed by some mischief or the person disagrees with the person when questioned. Miller was interested in McCarthy trials in the 1940s/50s and made the book parallel to it, Salem witch trials of 1682.Miller may have oversimplified matters, in that while there were no actual witches in Salem, there were certainly Communists in 1950s America. However, one can argue that Millers concern in The Crucible is not with whether the accused actually are witches, but rather with the refusal of the court officials to believe that they are not. McCarthyism limits, which wronged many innocents and this parallel was felt strongly in Millers own time. In real life, at Millers time, Abigail Williams was 12 days old, but in the play she is 17, but why did he change the age?He did this to make Abigail Williams a better character to make her do all the mischievous things she does in the play. At the age of 17, you are mature and able to make an opinion, and act more like an adult, unlike a 12 year old where you are still to young to do things adults do. Danforth was not a real person, he was made up, but the wonderful thing or so him is that he is made up of 3 characters. These three characters were the judges, but they would not be as dramatic and neither strong, unless there is one person who rules, devising that character more remembered, and more important to the play.

The Omani Capital Muscat has come a long way from the simple old souk to the ultramodern hypermarkets. The concept of the friendly neighborhood store, by all indications, appears to be on its way to becoming history. It is the malls with their better ambience, wider choice, better facilities and the convenience of having all that you need under one roof that are attracting more and more customers . Retailers, realizing the potential have been quick to set both expansion and re-branding plans in motion. For retailers in Oman, the accent has been on acceleration. With the Omani economy growing at a very rapid pace, there is tremendous interest among retail sector investors in the region. One of the reasons for the growing interest of Omani nationals is the increased income and outgo cater .The sultanate has seen in the past, a rapid increase in the income due to omanisation. Omanisation has created many strain opportunities for the nati onals who in turn have increased the spending power of the nationals which is driving them more and more towards the shopping malls. The market includes a major price sensiti ve customer segment also. Backward integration, to further streamline operations, is another route that certain retailers in Oman are favoring. They are launching its own private label across its outlets as a measure to counter escalating prices. The other major strategy used by these hypermarkets is of collaboration. For Example the car small within a shopping mall it is this basis, in novelty as well as practicality that promises to improve existing levels of customer convenience. Another strategy of Just Ask programme, where worldwide products are directly makes their way to the homes ofconsumers in Oman. The retailers understand that survival is not just about macrocosm fit. Hard work has to be combined with smart ideas that foresee the future. Considering the competition, everyone is improving their operations if they dont, they will lose their market position and share. Efficiency is not authentically a relative parameter. It is important that first time customers should bec ome permanent customers and stay that way. Considering the competition, it is no surprise that all the players in the retail market are raising the stakes. Competition is healthy, and it is needed to improve the services and operations of the hypermarkets. With more competitions the hypermarkets will come out with innovative ideas to improve upon their quality and services. With this the customer is gaining and behind the market is moving towards customers market. The markets are trying to differentiate themselves on the basis of factors like customer orientation, Number of retail outlets, low price, wide range, competent management, more space etc. The customer wants premium on good price, convenience and good customer service. The key ingredients for any successful retailer brand experience, convenience, customer service, social responsibility, todays true differentiato rs. l Earning points toward rewards or free or discounted merchandise.Using third-party partner currencies, such as airline miles for retail purchases.Offering rebates or discounts for using a store-branded credit card.Providing information that is relevant, valuable and exclusive.Allowing members access to products, services and experience otherwise unavailable to the public.Recognizing best customers with elite status.Inviting customer involvement in opportunities such as beta testing, first access to new products, participating in an advisory board, creating and submitting advertising ideas, even inviting best customers to parties and special events.Challenges faced by the Retailers in Oman footing war Competition can lead to the price wars l Discount is expected by the gulf customer in case of bulk purchase. l Sale is one of the important factor which pulls the customers towards the malls and only two promotions a year are allowed which are too less to sustain the customer for 1 2 months l More and more companies with international brands and structure are coming in the competition l Once upon a time, retailers knew all their customers personally. They knew their preferences and what was happening in their lives. With this knowledge, retailers were able to react quickly and market to each customer individually. Along the way of growing chains and building malls and promoting self-service, many retailers lost touch with their customers. l E-commerce is again coming as a new challenge to the hypermarkets. l Less size of the population is another challenge in front of the retail sector as with more competition and less number of customers the market is moving more and more towards becoming the buyers market. l Dubai again is a curse to the retail sector with its competitive prices and easy approachability. l Tourism is growing but the growth is not fast enough to catch with the tourism in UAE.SuggestionsMore initiative from the government in the form of more c ommercial activities.Connecting tourism with shopping need to improve tourism to trap the enormouspotential present in this sector, which will enhance the retail sector further.Duties on certain items should be reduced to encourage the retailersDiscouraging customers to buy from Dubai by creating an awareness programthose items are much cheaper here than in DuabiInternational Service standards should be provided by the hypermarketsSince the beginning of the 1970s, with Kilters pioneering work, the topic of atmospherics effects on consumer demeanor has gained popularity Managers of retail and service outlets have understood the importance of the built environment in enhancing product evaluations, consumer satisfaction with the shopping experience and sales. There is a need for the ongoing training programs in Retail Management for the all managerial and non managerial staff members. There is a need to give more advertize up the Tourism Industry in the country.ConclusionsThe challenge in retail sector in Oman is perpetual. It was the equal in the past and itwill remain the same in the future understanding the retail consumer. In Oman consumers have higher expectations for lower prices. They are not prepared to compromise their lusts and ethical values for merely more expensive products or basic low cost items. Shopping is becoming increasingly individualistic, driven by the growing diversity of the consumer marketplace, technology enablers and consumers desire for greater influence and control. The retail power structure has permanently shifted from sellers to buyers with more and more shopping malls in Oman .Retailers have to use the problem solving approach. It means understanding what the consumer is trying to accomplish by looking at his ultimate goal. The hypermarkets in Oman are constantly monitoring the feedbacks given by the customers and are very quick to respond to the problematic areas and suggestions. The hypermarkets as long as will keep their fin gers on the pulse of the gulf customers will have a long way to go. The retailers need to understand that Retailers dont own customers, they own retailers. There is an increasing population switching from loyalists to non preference. Consumers need to be connected. It means getting away from a transaction mentality and focusing on customer relationships, bonds of trust that create innovative opportunities to extend the relationship further. Online Auctions For Everyone On Ebay Business Essay
Online Auctions For Everyone On Ebay Business EssayEBay was launched in 1995 as an online platform that permitted efficient peer-to-peer trade in an auction format. (Daniels, John D., Radebaugh,Lee H., Sullivan, Daniel P., 2007) The online auction site provided a space on the inter plunder for sight to buy, sell, and trade any multitude of items from al intimately any category imaginable. As for the business itself, the beauty of it is that eBay has no inventory, storage, transportation or production costs associated with their product. The product is simply providing the environment on the web for hatful to auction their goods. The concept can be thought of much like an electronic garage or yard sale where for a small fee, citizenry can post their items on eBay. The selling scathe for items affix is totally up to the individual and ebay just obtains a small percentage of the selling price after the auction is complete, usuall between 7 and 18 percent. (Daniels, John D., Rade baugh,Lee H., Sullivan, Daniel P., 2007). Therefore, eBays subject matter competency is simply matching buyer and seller together by means of an online platform.Initially, eBays scheme was to match up buyers and sellers collecting a small fee from each operation, scarcely the business grew quickly. One reason for the rapid growth was the fact that eBay was providing an wall socket for items that were not very marketable by conventional store fronts. Additionally, the internet connect people from all over, making marketing virtually free. By 1999, eBays net revenues grew to $225 million and continued to grow to 3.2 billion dollars by 2004. (Daniels, John D., Radebaugh,Lee H., Sullivan, Daniel P., 2007) Up to this point most of the registered users of eBay resided in the United States but the site was accessed by people all around the globe. The presented eBay with the prospect to expand globally as a means to increase their value mountain range. In order to comply with their c ompany mickle of creating the worlds largest global trading community and to help people trade, eBay had to expand into the global market by understanding and embracing a decentralized value chain. This meant attracting spick-and-span registered users from foreign countries by creating largely independent country subsidiaries. For example, eBay began acquiring companies in foreign countries that were similar auction sites. This allowed eBay not only to gain those customers from the acquired company but benefit from the cultural acceptance of that particular company. Many of these foreign businesses operated in their native language making it easier for locals to conduct business with eBay. In time, eBay would change the names of these companies but not lose the customers because they adapted the acquired company to the core competency and company vision. This system opened smart markets for eBay around the globe. It is important to reemphasize that eBays value chain is virtual m ainly because there is no real product associated with their core competency. Value chain refers to the real work a business has to do in order to conceive, design, produce, market, and distribute a product and its support to the consumer. In eBays case, the Internet has circumvented real work for the alternative idea of the virtual value chain. Value is created through virtual networks, rather than through static, internally focused chains. (Daniels, John D., Radebaugh,Lee H., Sullivan, Daniel P., 2007)Ebays initial strategy involved matching up buyers and sellers. The final details of a transaction were totally up to the two parties involved and not eBay itself. Shipping and money transfer were the responsibility of the seller. Ebay began looking for airs to innovate and did so by purchasing the company PayPal which is used to transfer payments between buyers and sellers. Now, not only did eBay provide a medium for customers to conduct auctions, but they also provided a simple centering to complete shipping and payment transactions. Again, this added feature is virtual in nature. Ebay placid has no real resource involved but collects a fee on any transaction. Therefore the value chain in increased even more.Ebay began competing with other businesses offering mainstream products for sale on their auction platform. Whereas an auction normally posted an item for sale for a certain amount of time and the highest bidder won, mainstream products would be placed on auction with a reserve and a buy this instant price applied for those not wanting to wait out the time of the auction. The downfall to this is that if the reserve bid was not met, the item did not sell. Although this strategy is still active, more emphasis is now placed on eBays original strategy. Because individual sellers were overrun by fixed-price retailers they lost interest in the site and buyers began looking elsewhere to search for the less mainstream products upon which eBay built its busin ess. In an article titled eBays New Strategy What Was Once Old is New Again, author Matt Pace coined eBays new strategy as, Its out with the new and in with the old both in terms of corporate strategy and product mix. After failing to compete as a fixed-priced on line retailer with Amazon.com and Walmart, eBay decided to revert back to its original premise of an auction clearinghouse for used goods and collectables. (Matt Pace, 2009)Now that eBay is back to its core competency, what is the way a result? Profits and growth were beginning to fall based largely on the fact that eBay had not successfully moved into some foreign markets. Because eBays platform relies on internet usage, many emerging economies were handicapped in the fact that most households do not have internet connections. When faced with this problem, eBay saw an opportunity to grow by moving into the telecommunications market. Ebay purchased the company Skype as a means to penetrate markets where computer access was limited but communications was not. According to Skype chairperson Josh Silverman, communications is no longer just about voice its now multi-modal mood messages, chat, voice calling, multi-party calling, video calling and online screen sharing. Where and how we communicate is expanding to laptops, wandering phones, and flat panel TVs. Any connected computing device with the addition of software becomes a communication device. Skype continues to add over 350,000 new account registrations per mean solar day all around the globe. (Jim Courtney, 2009) According to executives, the synergies of standalone businesses, eBay, PayPal and Skype have the ability to pursue new market opportunities and capture future growth. Working together, these three businesses can create tout ensemble new opportunities for innovation and expansion, and redouble the strength of the companys leadership position (eBay-Inc, 2006)Ebay has continued to reenforce their position in their market by meeting new ch allenges head on. Tackling problems such as translational software and online security is a top priority. Ebay announced cooperation with Yahoo on phishing and according eBays CEO, Meg Whitman, this will be our core competency over the next 10 years. The balance is tricky, but the company has dipped its toe in the social networking waters a few times, most recently on Tuesday when Skype partnered with MySpace to become the worlds largest voice network. (Wendy Tanaka, 2007) All of the challenges faced by eBay can be culminated in one small shift in their strategy for the years to come. The initial strategy of providing an environment for buyers and sellers to auction their items has morphed into seeking out new buyers and sellers to use their environment through added values in their value chain.

Stereotyping of Minority Students :: Sociology Racism Prejudice Essays
Stereotyping of Minority Students Throughout most of my school years, before attending MCTC, I had never go steadyd inter-racial schooling. I went to a small high school with about twenty minority students. These students were non outcasts they were treated as any other non-minority student. Therefore, I had little experience with minorities in a non-minority school. After the speech that was given by Michael Jefferson, I was more informed on the effects of stereotyping of minority students in a non-minority school. Stereotyping whitethorn cause students and teachers to view minority students on a non-minority campus as inferior. This may cause some teachers or faculty members to intend that these minority students are not as capable of achieving the same quality of work as non-minority students. Scholarships are sometimes given out to non0minority students collect to their racial background. I suppose this happens due to the stereotype of minority students not being capable of the educational work as that of other students. Classroom behavior toward minority students may be shown in appropriate, and/or unrecognized. For instance, a teacher may call on a non-minority student before a minority student. The teacher may pick on the non-minority due to a belief that these students care about their schooling, whereas minority students are being pre-judged without the chance to really learn. Some people even believe that combine the different minorities may cause problems. Combining minority with non-minority students can create some conflict. Some non-minority students, this attitude of aggression may be brought on by close-minded non-minority students. These students let their attitude take over their learning time, by worrying about the other minority students. Each student, whether thy be minority or non-minority, must put their mind on learning than on another minority on the campus. Some students may see that combining minority with n on-minority students, as a way of learning about different people and their cultures. I f students would open their eyes as they do their ears for learning, students would see a satisfying new possibility of meeting others, not minding if they are a minority or not. These students should also learn to use their own ideas, and not always to believe in the media point of view. Today the media is a major source of minority and non-minority
Old Testament Connections from Grapes of Wrath :: essays research papers
John Steinbeck makes many Biblical allusions in his book The Grapes of Wrath. Many of these connections are on a small layer, perhaps applying to only nonpareil individual. Jim Casy, the Christ figure, is one example of an allusion from the New Testament. However, the whole book can be seen as a Biblical allusion to the story of the Exodus and the life of Moses. not only does the story of the fictional Joad family relate to the Exodus, merely the story of the Okies and the great migration that took place during the Dust Bowl in the 1930s. This compelling story of the migrants can be divided into three parts the oppression, the exodus, and the Promised Land. The chronicle of the Exodus begins with the Hebrews being enslaved to the Egyptians. Because of this, God sent ten plagues to Egypt. After the tenth plague, the pharaoh agreed to let the Hebrews become lay off and their journey across the desert is known as the Exodus. Thus the modern word exodus refers to any mass migrat ion or departure of a heavy(p) group of people. The excursion of the migrant workers can be described as a modern day exodus (compared to time-period of the Biblical story). Like the Hebrews, the Joad family and the rest of the migrants abolish up fleeing from their oppressors, which happens to be the banks. The period of time when the Okies use Route 66 as a way to move cross-country is the true exodus of the story, as it is a migration of a people. The migrants reaching California can be compared to the Hebrews finally reaching the Promised Land of Israel. Not only does the book relate to the movement of the Israelites, but also to the legendary man who lead them Moses. Christians, Jews, and Muslims consider Moses a great prophet. One reference to Moses comes when Uncle John puts Rose of Sharons baby in the river. This is ofttimes like the life of Moses, when he is sent down the Nile River as a child.
